Figures of Color: Radically Black

December 2, 2021 - February 15, 2022

Figures of Color is an ongoing project that looks closely at how black skin is represented in works of art, and the relationship between this representation and elements of light and darkness. Taking inspiration from painters such as Kerry James Marshall and Jon Key, the images contain a painterly quality which pushes the boundaries of photography. The work focuses on the marriage between color and form, engaging with stark Blackness as a symbol, while leaving room for creative interpretation. In a world that’s constantly changing, it’s interesting to think about all the ways in which black and white work together. This visual concept paired with the fundamental issues of race, make for a life-long personal project.

Figures of Color: Radically Black will be on view during in-person performances at OZ Arts. To schedule an in-person appointment to view the work outside of performance times, please email Manager of Artistic Programming Daniel Jones at daniel@ozartsnashville.org.
