Has Nashville “jumped the shark” or will the boom get bigger?

SOLD OUT

Let’s face it: Nashville is hot! Everyone knows that Nashville is known nationwide as the “it” place to be right now. Tourists are flocking to Music City; 2022 was a record year with 14.4 million visitors—with $9 billion brought in from visitor spending. Moreover, they’re not just visiting; people are moving here in droves! Approximately 36 people make our city their new home – every day – and Nashville is now ranked #3 across the U.S. in its number of out-of-town home buyers. Concurrently, in a recent Twitter poll of Nashville residents conducted by Fox 17 news, over 70% of residents said, “No; they do not like the city’s growth they’re seeing.” Growing pains are being experienced by longer commutes, construction sites on almost every block, crowded schools, and city services that are squeezed too tightly for many. Has Nashville “jumped the shark” or is our city just beginning to take off?

As a Nashville-native, I have seen significant growth of our city fueled by a fantastic community for business and innovation. As CEO of HealthStream, a public healthcare IT company I founded over 30 years ago, I’ve enjoyed the ease that comes with recruiting prospective employees to move to Nashville. Even now with our hybrid workplace policy, we’re seeing new employees voluntarily move to Nashville to be a part of this thriving community. The question for this table is: Will Nashville’s exciting growth proceed even more rapidly or have we passed over the apex of its explosive growth? In other words, has Nashville “jumped the shark?”
